Turnaround for Children Presents At DC Public Schools Summer Leadership Institute

Turnaround for Children’s staff, including Founder and Senior Science Advisor, Pamela Cantor, M.D., Michael Lamb, Executive Director for Washington D.C., and a group of expert facilitators and content designers, came together to create and deliver eight hours of learning experiences for more than 600 DC Public Schools (DCPS) school leaders, such as principals, assistant principals, instructional coaches and teacher leaders — including every single school leader from preschool through 12th grade — at the 2019 DCPS Summer Leadership Institute (SLI).

During the SLI, for the first time, each school applied Turnaround’s “Vision for School and Student Success” through a new self-assessment tool from Turnaround known as the Whole Child Inventory, complete with online reports delivered to their inboxes in real-time. Schools then revised their annual goals and dove into eight new tools from the Turnaround for Children Toolbox.

Dr. Cantor gave the keynote address, where she led the audience through her personal journey to understand the science that explains how children learn and what can support or derail healthy development. She was introduced by Melissa Kim, Deputy Chancellor of DC Public Schools. During her keynote, Dr. Cantor urged educators to organize their schools and classrooms with the science of learning and development as a foundation, in order to reveal and foster the passions and skills of every student. Dr. Cantor also shared several practices educators can use to turn their schools into positive developmental and academic forces in their students’ lives. DCPS Chancellor Dr. Lewis Ferebee thanked Dr. Cantor for her efforts. Watch the video.
