Turnaround for Children and Pamela Cantor, M.D. Cited in House Appropriations Committee Hearing
Turnaround for Children Founder and Senior Science Advisor, Pamela Cantor, M.D., was cited by Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro during her opening remarks for the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies hearing on the President’s FY 2021 Budget Request:
“If I can just quote for you from a report by Dr. Pamela Cantor, who was a psychiatrist and co-founded an educational organization called Turnaround for Children, which translates the science of learning and development into … problem-solving in our schools. She led a team commissioned in New York City by the Board of Education to assess the impact of the [September 11] terrorist attacks on the city’s public-school children, what did she find? Surprisingly, while 68 percent of the children they observed had experienced trauma sufficient to impair their functioning in school, it is from their ongoing experience of growing up in poverty, not from what they witnessed that terrifying September day.”
