Turnaround Founder and Senior Science Advisor, Pamela Cantor, M.D., and Turnaround Vice President, Partner Impact, Amy Nicholson, were guest speakers at the LEAP Learning Series: Relationships, Routines and Resilience webinar.
Cantor and Nicholson joined Stacy Stewart, Principal of Belmont-Cragin Elementary School and Jannette Moya, Personalized Learning Manager at LEAP Innovations, to discuss the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on student learning and development. They also shared best practices educators can use to help students thrive today at home and when schools reopen.
Stewart explained how the pandemic is impacting students and staff at Belmont-Cragin Elementary School. She highlighted the school’s efforts to maintain a whole-child centered approach to learning and to meet the needs of the community at this time.
Cantor discussed the science of learning and development and the impact of chronic stress on the developing brain. She explained, “The path to a calm classroom is a calm brain. The path to learning is a clam brain, and the path to both of these is to prioritize activities that build relationships, routines and resilience.”
Nicholson outlined Turnaround’s The Three Rs: Relationships, Routines and Resilience, which offers practical strategies caregivers and educators can use to make homes and schools environments that inoculate children from the stress of challenging times.
