Brooklyn Laboratory Charter Schools Success Coaching Playbook Featured in Getting Smart

In an article by Eric Tucker, co-founder and Executive Director of Brooklyn Laboratory Charter Schools, he introduces the Success Coaching Playbook, a research-based framework developed by Brooklyn LAB in collaboration with Turnaround for Children, Transcend, City Year, The Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University, The Forum for Youth Investment, EL Education and Dezudio.

The playbook was created for “educators and schools that want to build a network of success coaches to work with students one-on-one and in small-group settings,” writes Tucker.

Derived from conversation with partners, the playbook highlights four key lessons success coaches should keep in mind to facilitate learning during the pandemic. Those lesson include:

1. Understand the impact of trauma but use it as a lens, not a label
2. Build authentic relationships as an antidote to complex challenges
3. Foster a culture of primary care within the school
4. Adults don’t need to be experts to have a positive impact on learners

Tucker cites Turnaround Founder and Senior Science Advisor, Pamela Cantor M.D., when describing the impact of trauma on the developing brain and the power of positive relationships in surmounting adversity.
