Turnaround for Children Founder and Senior Science Advisor Pamela Cantor, M.D. spoke at the “YOU Belong in STEM” National Coordinating Conference, hosted by the U.S. Department of Education.
With plenary sessions occurring virtually and live at its headquarters in Washington, D.C., more than 225 STEM champions from 30 states convened on the morning of December 7 to learn more about the importance of belonging in STEM. The conference encouraged connecting with student and educators on their experiences in STEM and developing partnerships and commitments to support the department’s goals for expanding and investing in STEM education.
“What is the power source of our brains? It’s connection.”— Pamela Cantor, M.D.
During the opening plenary, Cantor shared insights from the science of learning and development, including how a whole-child design that is grounded in safety, belonging, and positive relationships can fuel healthy development and learning for each and every young person. Other speakers included AFT’s Randi Weingarten, NEA’s Becky Pringle, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, Education Secretary Miguel Cardona and more.
