The American Institutes for Research (AIR) brief, “The Science of Learning and Development (SoLD) in Afterschool Systems and Settings,” shares practical guidance for afterschool professionals in out-of-school settings.
The brief is based on findings from the Science of Learning and Development (SoLD) Alliance, “a collaborative effort to combine findings from diverse areas of research, from neuroscience to human development, into an integrated science of learning and development.” The SoLD Alliance is made up of six partner organizations: AIR, EducationCounsel, The Forum for Youth Investment, Learning Policy Institute, Populace, and Turnaround for Children. The brief includes:
- Select findings from the SoLD Alliance’s efforts;
- Relevant, actionable key takeaways on relational settings, cultural competence, and trauma and adversity;
- Suggestions for practical ways to support high-quality afterschool systems and settings; and
- An outline of the elements of developmentally rich contexts that foster learning and healthy development.
