Turnaround for Children Founder and Senior Science Advisor, Pamela Cantor, M.D., was a featured speaker for the webinar, “Safety, Belonging and Learning: An Inextricable Link,” hosted by Newsela and Turnaround.
The fourth in a series of webinars on reimagining learning, Cantor was joined by Newsela Chief Academic Officer, Dan Cogan-Drew, DC Public Schools Deputy Chancellor, Dr. Melissa Kim, and NYC Department of Education Chief of School Culture, Climate and Well-Being, Dr. Jawana M. Johnson.
The discussion centered on how to create safety and belonging in the classroom so all students can learn and unlock their full potential. Cantor kicked off the session by exploring the biological links between safety, belonging and learning. Presenters continued the discussion on how instructional materials can impact students’ sense of belonging and the unique ways schools in DC and New York City are prioritizing creating safe and affirming school communities.
