Statement from Pamela Cantor, M.D. on Separation of Families at U.S. Border

There is no version of human cruelty greater than separating children from their parents. In neurobiological terms, every single one of these children is experiencing a life-altering trauma through the experience of overwhelming stress, where the only known remedy IS the presence of an adult providing safety in protection.

Who is protecting these children today? It is not their parents and it is not our country, whose highest purpose in our history has been the protection of the most vulnerable.

The only questions left to be answered are how much stress and damage we will continue to inflict, what the lifelong impact to these children’s health and development will be, and what our responsibility will be to them, today and forever.
