The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) partnered with over 40 organizations, including Turnaround for Children, to create an SEL Roadmap for Reopening School.

The guidance document was designed to help school leaders prepare for the school year ahead following the abrupt closures in spring. Centered on fostering relationships and leveraging existing SEL practices within a school, the document caters to schools at any stage of their SEL journey.

The Roadmap offers four key SEL practices with 3-5 activities and accompanying tools. The four key practices are:

  1. Take time to cultivate and deepen relationships, build partnerships, and plan for SEL.
  2. Design opportunities where adults can connect, heal, and build their capacity to support students.
  3. Create safe, supportive, and equitable learning environments that promote all students’ social and emotional development.
  4. Use data as an opportunity to share power, deepen relationships, and continuously improve support for students, families, and staff.

Stress and the Brain from the Turnaround for Children Toolbox was also included in the roadmap.
